KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Ashutosh Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohit Sharma were run-out
  • DC were bowled out in 19th over
  • MI beat DC by 12 runs
The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) had a dramatic ending as the Hardik Pandya-led side registered a 12-run victory at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, while the hosts lost their first match of the season.
When Jasprit Bumrah came to bowl the 19th over, the match was evenly poised, with DC needing 23 runs in 12 balls. Ashutosh Sharma put the Capitals on the front foot with a boundary on the second and third balls of the over. However, what followed was unprecedented, as Ashutosh was run out on the fourth ball while trying to take a second run. Kuldeep Yadav faced the same fate on the next delivery. Both Kuldeep and Ashutosh fell short, with wicket-keeper Ryan Rickleton completing the job on the striker's end
On the last ball of the over, Mohit Sharma attempted a quick single but found himself short of the crease after a direct hit on the non-striker's end by Mitchell Santner. On all three dismissals, Mitchell Starc was on the other end as DC batter bizarrely tried to keep him away from strike despite his reputation of being a reliable batter.

Mumbai Indians' Rare First With Run-Out Hat-Trick

This marked the only the second instance in IPL history of three run-outs taking place in the same over and first of a three such dismissals in back-to-back deliveries. The only other instance of three such dismissals in the same over was in 2008 in a match between Kings XI Punjab and MI, when the Mumbai-based outfit lost three wickets in the 20th over of the game.
The game was famous for Yuvraj pulling off a stunning diving run-out on the last ball as the visitors pulled off a stunning one-run victory at the Wankhede Stadium. However, those three wickets came in alternate balls, making MI the first team to take a hat-trick of run-outs in the same over of an IPL match. However, in that match, there were five run-outs in MI's innings, which is still an IPL record.
This victory ensured MI maintained their invincible record after scoring 200+ runs in a match. MI have won on all 15 instances they defended a total of more than 200 in a match. The only team with a 100% win record after scoring above 200 in an IPL are the Capitals, who have won on all 13 occasions.
The result marked the first instance of MI winning a match after Tilak Varma scored a half-century as the five-time champions lost on each of the last seven instances of the young star reaching the milestone.
