Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are expected to play the Sudirman Cup in China.
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) named a 14-member Indian squad for the Sudirman Cup - the mixed team World Championship - to be held in Xiamen, China, from April 27 to May 4.
Star men's doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty – who missed the Badminton Asia Championships earlier this month due to a back strain to the former – have been named in the squad. Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi have been included as backups.
However, India will miss their top women's doubles pairing of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand - who also missed the continental event - due to injury. In their absence, Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra will be India's top women's doubles combo.
PV Sindhu has been named as India's premier women's singles player, while 19-year-old Anupama Upadhyaya will be her backup. Malvika Bansod, who played in the Badminton Asia Championships, has not been considered for the tournament, while Anmol Kharb, the star of India's Badminton Asia Team Championships victory in 2024, is a notable absentee from the squad.
Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy will lead the charge in men's singles. Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, who recently made a quarterfinal finish at the Badminton Asia Championships, will be India's top mixed doubles pair.
“The selectors have picked the best possible combination across all five categories despite a few injury concerns. We’re no longer reliant on just one or two disciplines to win a tie, and that makes us a serious contender in any team event,” said BAI general secretary Sanjay Mishra. “We believe this squad has the depth and talent to go the distance.”
India are placed in Group D alongside former champions Indonesia, two-time runners-up Denmark, and England. India qualified for the prestigious tournament based on world rankings.
The Indian team's best performances at the Sudirman Cup came in 2011 and 2017 when they reached quarterfinals. In the last edition in 2023 at Suzhou, China, India were eliminated in the group stage after losing to Malaysia and Chinese Taipei.
