James Anderson, who retired from Test cricket last summer with 704 wickets, is set to be awarded a knighthood for his "services to cricket".
Anderson is the only sportsperson to feature in the resignation honours list of former Prime Minister - and cricket fan - Rishi Sunak.
The former pace bowler made his first appearance for England in a one-day international against Australia in December 2002, before making his Test debut in May 2003.
Anderson went on to play 188 Tests, 194 ODIs, and 19 T20 internationals for England during an international career spanning over two decades. His number of Test caps is second only to India’s Sachin Tendulkar (200).
Among all three formats, Anderson excelled in Test cricket, and his tally of 704 wickets is a record in English cricket. Even though he retired from international cricket, he remains an active cricketer after re-signing with Lancashire this year.
However, a calf injury delayed his stint with Lancashire. But Anderson has said he intends to play for three more years. He currently has 1,126 wickets to his name across all formats.
“Congratulations Sir Jimmy Anderson,” said Richard Thompson, the current chair of the England and Wales Cricket Board. “This is a really well-deserved honour for an England legend who has given so much to our sport.
“Jimmy’s career has been marked by extraordinary achievements, not least in winning the Ashes four times and becoming England’s all-time leading wicket-taker.
“His skill, determination, and sportsmanship have inspired millions of cricketers and fans alike, in England and around the world.
“This is fitting recognition for a true world-great who has given so much to the game on and off the field.”
Anderson is the third English cricketer of his generation to receive the honour, with former teammates Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook both knighted back in 2019.
