Bangladesh's greatest-ever cricketer, Shakib Al Hasan's international career is in jeopardy due to his political journey. Shakib announced his retirement from Test and T20Is during the India tour, but he was willing to continue playing ODIs. However, his links with the ousted Awami League regime and tenure as an MP from Magura have cast doubts on whether he could ever return to the cricket field in national colours.
While Shakib's political career played a major role in his snub from the Bangladesh team, he feels joining politics wasn't a wrong decision as his intention was to serve the people.
"I don't see anything wrong in what I did… If it was a mistake for me to join politics, then anyone who joins politics in the future would also be making a mistake," Shakib told Daily Sun's Zaigum Azam in a candid interview -- titled 'My greatest wish is to play for my country and retire from home' -- published on Wednesday.
"Joining politics is a right for any citizen… I think I was right when I joined, and I still believe I was right because my intention was to work for the people of Magura," said the former Bangladesh captain.
While announcing his retirement from Test, Shakib expressed his wish to play his farewell Test in Dhaka against South Africa, however, that was not the case. Later, he was banned from bowling due to illegal action, but it was recently revoked after he cleared the bowling assessment test.
Shakib backed his decision to enter politics and said that he wanted to change the system, and that it was important for him to get into the system.
"From my perspective, as far as entering politics is concerned, I always felt that if I wanted to make significant changes, I needed to be inside the system… how can you change the system unless you're part of it?" questioned Shakib.
