Rohit Sharma is currently leading the Indian team with aplomb in the Champions Trophy 2025. However, the Indian captain is already 37 years old and not much time is left for him to call curtains on his storied career. This means that ndia would need a new captain in all three formats of the game. Jasprit Bumrah has been reported to replace him in Test Cricket, with question marks being raised on whether Rohit will play in the longer format. Former India all-rounder and batting coach Sanjay Bangar has now touted a 25-year-old star to replace Rohit in the long term.
In an interaction with JioHotstar, Sanjay Bangar said that Shubman Gill is going to shoulder the responsibility of the Indian team going forward. Banagar pointed out Gill's phenomenal one-day record in the recent past. The former India batting coach also praised Gill's shots during his 46-run knock vs Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2025.
“Clearly, he’s the guy who is going to shoulder the responsibility of the Indian team going forward in years to come. His foundations are really, really strong and add to that the confidence of nearly two-and-a-half years of performing in one-day cricket. In one-day cricket, he’s been phenomenal," Bangar said.
"Now look, the straight drive, the on-drive are the shots wherein you cannot actually hit the ball really hard. But here, he was hitting the ball so hard that despite the mid-off and the mid-on fielder being on that 30-yard circle, the ball was going and hitting them. That’s the kind of timing he possesses,” the former India all-rounder added.
Shubman Gill In Top Form
Shubman Gill has been in phenomenal touch in ODIs. In the Champions Trophy 2025, he has scored 147 runs so far, which includes a century in the first match vs Bangladesh. In fact, Gill has slammed 406 runs in his last 5 ODI innings, which includes two centuries and two fifties. He also overthrew Babar Azam recently to become the no.1 batter in the ICC Men's ODI rankings.
