Delhi coach Sarandeep Singh on Saturday, February 1 said that all that Virat Kohli emphasised while speaking to youngsters in the dressing room was to maintain discipline, not just on the field but off the field as well. Kohli's return to domestic cricket was the biggest headline over the past three days and it ended in an anti-climatic manner, with the star Indian batter managing just one innings and six runs.
Resuming the third day at 334/7, Delhi ended up with 374 all out in the first session to take a 133-run lead. In reply, Railways folded for a paltry 114, handing Delhi an innings win.
Sarandeep, a former India offspinner himself, spoke on how Kohli's entry into the match made it a different ball game altogether.
"Virat kept speaking to the boys before as well as during the match. In the dressing room, he spoke to every batter. He said that it is crucial to maintain discipline not just on but off the ground as well. If we live a disciplined life off the ground, only then a disciplined performance comes out on the ground as well, which we have seen with Virat," Sarandeep said in reply to a query from Sports Now.
"I always say he is the brand ambassador of cricket worldwide. Why do so many people follow him? Because of his discipline. But it is ultimately on the youngsters to follow or not follow his words. He has done his bit by sharing his wisdom. What matters is how much they follow it," Sarandeep added.
Asked if as a senior and a coach he imparts some knowledge to Kohli, the former India off-spinner said that their discussions are only on the mental aspects of the game.
"We just speak about the mental part of the game. He just needs to be mentally positive, which he is. We spoke for hours about what is happening in international cricket and what he thinks about it. He just needs a good frame of mind. There is no problem with his technique or anything as such. There is a lot of mental pressure on you when you play at that level," Sarandeep said.
