After the grand celebrations after the 2024 T20 World Cup victory, Rohit Sharma promised another round of the same after the 2025 Champions Trophy exactly a month before the mega tournament begins in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates which many have tipped to be the last ICC event the Indian captain might play in.
As the greatest Indian cricketers assembled at the Wankhede Stadium for the stadium's 50th anniversary, Rohit revealed he dreamt of winning a major event for India as captain after the team's heroic welcome in Mumbai post the 2007 T20 World Cup triumph under MS Dhoni's captaincy. The inaugural edition marked Rohit's debut in T20I cricket and he played a key role in the Men in Blue's victory.
Rohit also revealed he wanted them to celebrate the 2024 triumph at the iconic venue when the team chalked up their plans for their return to India from Barbados. The team flew to Mumbai from Delhi after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"When we returned from South Africa after winning the (T20) World Cup, I dreamt about winning another World Cup and bringing it here. I remember, we were still in Barbados after winning the (T20) World Cup and we were stuck there due to a storm but planning was in process as to what we would do once we are back in India. It was planned that we would go to Delhi but what after that?" No one knew what to do after that but I wanted that World Cup (trophy) should come here at Wankhede. Each of the recent World Cups which we have won in 2007 and 2011 have been celebrated at Wankhede and bringing (the trophy) of 2024 was also very important for us," said Rohit at the event.
"We will embark on another tournament. I am sure when we reach Dubai (the wishes) of 140 crore people will be behind us, we know that. We will try and do everything we can to bring this trophy (ICC Champions Trophy) back here at the Wankhede," Rohit said to loud cheers from the crowd.
The Champions Trophy was presented at the Wankhede Stadium, and it stopped in Mumbai for the Trophy tour, which has seen it travel all over the world before it returns to Pakistan.
The event will start on February 19 with a match between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi. All matches of the Indian team including the blockbuster India-Pakistan clash as well as a potential semi-final and final will take place in Dubai. India will open their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20.
Meanwhile, Rohit recalled the celebrations after the T20 World Cup and hailed the people of Mumbai for the special scenes that the team got to witness. Before an event at the Wankhede Stadium, the team held an open bus parade near Marine drive.
"When I woke up the next day after the celebration here that's when we realised. Because looking at what happened the previous day, when we did the parade with so many people on the roads watching the team, the next day I realised what we did was very, very special." "Winning the World Cup and celebrating it with your people is a different thing; you celebrate anyway with your players and teams but celebrating it with your people is a different feeling and I knew that will happen only once we are back in Mumbai," said Rohit.
