Shakib Al Hasan In More Trouble As Dhaka Court Issues Arrest Warrant In Cheque Fraud Case (Source: AP)
Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan finds himself in legal trouble as a Dhaka court issued an arrest warrant against him in a dishonoured cheque case involving IFIC Bank, according to a report in Cricbuzz. Shakib, a former Awami League lawmaker, has been living abroad ever since former PM Sheikh Hasina fled the country following a student movement.
The arrest warrant was issued by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman. Shakib was named in the cheque fraud case on December 15 last year and he was asked to appear in the court before January 19 during the initial hearing on December 18.
The case was filed by IFIC Bank's Relationship Officer, Shahibur Rahman, on behalf of the bank where Shakib and three others were accused of failing to honor a commitment to transfer BDT 4,14,57,000 (approximately 41.4 million Tk) via two separate cheques.
The case also implicated Shakib's company, Al Hasan Agro Farm Ltd., its Managing Director Gazi Shahagir Hossein, and directors Emdadul Haque and Malaikar Begum. The company had borrowed various loans from the IFIC Bank's Banani branch and the cheques were given to replay the part of loans, however, they bounced due to insufficient funds.
Meanwhile, Shakib was not picked in the Bangladesh squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. Notably, Shakib was banned from bowling due to illegal action which played a significant role in the BCB snubbing the veteran all-rounder from the Bangladesh squad for the ICC event. The snub could mark the end of Shakib's career as an international cricket. The all-rounder retired from Tests during the Test series against India. He wanted to play his final game in the home series against South Africa in Dhaka, but couldn't as he was charged in a murder case and refused to return to the country citing security concerns.
