Jomel Warrican Breaks 66-Year-Old Record To Create History In Pakistan. (Twitter/AP)
Jomel Warrican created history with a remarkable seven-wicket haul against Pakistan on Sunday. As Warrican etched his name into West Indian cricketing history, he became the first Windies spinner to bag a five-wicket on Pakistan soil since 1959. He broke the 66-year-old record previously held by Sonny Ramadhin (4/25).
Warrican's performance was instrumental in Pakistan's dramatic collapse. They lost seven for 51 in the second as Warrican ran through the middle and lower order with excellent control of line and length. His speeds were generally quite slow—around the mid-70kph range—and he made life very difficult by consistently testing the batters.
Warrican tore through Pakistan's batting lineup, claiming seven wickets for 31 and restricting the men in green to just 157 in their second innings.
Best Men's Test innings figures by a visiting bowler in Pakistan:
8/83 (23.2) - Ravi Ratnayeke (SL) at Sialkot, 1985
8/85 (30.5) - Kapil Dev (IND) at Lahore, 1983
7/32 (18) - Jomel Warrican (WI) at Multan, 2205
West Indian left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican has bagged 349 first-class wickets and 54 in international cricket, and he is already being considered the greatest of all time for his country. But not many would know that growing up, he wanted to be a fast bowler.
"However, when I arrived at the Combermere Secondary School, Roddy Estwick asked me to bowl for him, and I ran in and bowled pace. He then asked me to try bowling spin, and so I did. From that day onwards, I was a spin bowler," he had told thesportskeeda in an interview.
Speaking on the match, Warrican showed how he had a mature head on his shoulders and said that he and his fellow bowlers couldn't afford to, "get carried away with the conditions."
"You got to stick to the basics, you got to be disciplined, put the ball in the right areas and just wait for something to happen sometimes and just not get too caught up in overly aggressive cricket; get carried away thinking that it's spinning conditions and we as spinners have to be a hundred per cent aggressive; but just have a balance, sticking to the basics and be very, very disciplined," he had told stabroeknews.
"For us it will be really neat for us to finish strong…just to finish the series with a win and just finish the World Test Championship with a bang," he concluded.
