Pickleball is set to hit the red carpet as movie star Ryan Reynolds and Warner Bros. signed an agreement to convert stages at the American filmed entertainment company in Hollywood into pickleball courts.
The "Maximum Effort Pickleball" venture is aimed to be a profit making endeavour as it intends to generate revenue by utilising underused studio space. “When life gives you a production slowdown, you build a pickleball empire,” Reynolds said in a teaser video posted to Instagram.
As the popularity of pickleball continues to sweep the United States—with a staggering 311 percent growth over the past three years—Reynolds saw a business opportunity in the trend, especially with Hollywood A-listers actively engaged in the sport. They have planned courts with different movie themes—from sci-fi to noir.
Warner Bros., on the other hand, has planned to rent out the stages by the hour and offer VIP packages to the Hollywood heroes, including Reynolds-narrated warm-up sessions.
Among the notable events that these courts will host are celebrity tournaments, fan events, and corporate league nights.
In the wake of Reynolds' latest move, many have joked that Deadpool 3 might be delayed again due to Reynolds' "court time."
“It is weird, it is fun, and it might just work,” said entertainment strategist Mia Clarkson. “Which also happens to describe Ryan Reynolds perfectly.”
At the moment, Hollywood provides public pickleball courts located at Plummer Park and West Hollywood Park. All pickleball court reservations are $8 per hour.
Ever since pickleball became a hit in the US, it has become a significant trend in Hollywood, with many celebrities not only playing but also investing in the sport. Renowned names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen DeGeneres, Kim Kardashian, and Selena Gomez are known for their penchant for pickleball.
Some of them have even invested in Major League Pickleball. For instance, Eva Longoria is an owner of the D.C. Pickleball Team. Heidi Klum, meanwhile, has stakes in several MLP franchises, including Chicago Slice. She has invested in MLP along with NBA greats Kevin Durant and Michael Phelps.
