Ayush Mhatre created history after making his debut for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday (April 20) after replacing Rahul Tripathi in the playing XI.
Mhatre, who replaced CSK Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad in the squad as an injury replacement, was immediately drafted into the line-up by the MS Dhoni-led side. The 17-year-old is making his debut at this home ground as the youngster hails from Mumbai and plays for them in domestic cricket.
The youngster made a strong impression on his IPL debut with a quick-fire knock of 32 in just 15 balls before he was dismissed by Deepak Chahar. The CSK batter hit four boundaries and two maximums in his knock.
Ayush Mhathre Creates History
Mhatre etched his name in the history books by becoming the youngest player in history to play for the Super Kings and the first to feature for the five-time champions before turning 18. He broke a record set by Abhinav Mukund in the inaugural edition in 2008.

Mhatre also became the first teenager to hit a boundary for the Super Kings as a result of his impressive cameo against MI. The previous youngest player to hit a boundary was Sameer Rizi (20 years, 111 days) in the 2024 season.
Overall, Mhatre is the fifth youngest player in IPL history to hit a six behind Vaibhav Suryanshi, Riyan Parag, Sarfaraz Khan, and Abhishek Sharma.
Mhatre's score of 32 is the first instance of a CSK player aged under 21 scoring more than 30 runs in an innings for the Men in Yellow. The previous youngest player to make a higher score than Mhatre's 32 was Suresh Raina's 53 ( aged 21 years, 138 days) against MI in the 2008 season at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Intrestingly Raina also made a knock of 32 (13 balls) on his CSK debut against Kings XI Punjab in 2008 at Mohali.
