KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- PBKS will host KKR
- Shreyas Iyer will lead PBKS against his former side
- This will the first time the two sides face each other in Mullanpur
Shreyas Iyer will face his former side Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), as Punjab Kings (PBKS) aim to bounce back after a defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their third home of the season at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh on Tuesday (April 15).
Shreyas led KKR to the IPL title last year before becoming the first captain to be released by a franchise in the season after they won the trophy. The star Indian cricketer entered the 2025 IPL Mega Auction and was purchased by PBKS for a whopping value of Rs. 26.75 crore, making him the second most expensive player in the league's history.
Shreyas became the 17th player to lead the franchise in 18 years. He is only one of five players to lead three teams and the second after Kumar Sangakkara to be appointed permanent captain of the franchise.
On the other hand, Ajinkya Rahane replaced Shreyas as KKR's captain. Interestingly, Rahane leads Mumbai in red-ball cricket, while Shreyas is the state team's white-ball captain.
Currently, KKR are fifth on the table with three wins and three defeats each. Meanwhile, PBKS are sixth on the table with three wins and two losses to their name.
Overall, KKR dominated the fixture, having won 21 out of the 33 games. This is the joint-second best head-to-head in IPL history alongside CSK VS RCB. Only Mumbai Indians (vs KKR) have won more matches (24) against a single opponent. The Punjab-based franchise has beaten KKR 12 times. This will be the first meeting between the two sides at the newly built stadium in Mullanpur. The last time the two sides went head-to-head, PBKS registered the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket history at Eden Gardens.
