Rohit Sharma's service to the Indian cricket team is set to be honoured with a special recognition at Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium. The Men in Blue skipper, who hails from Mumbai, is among the greatest players and captains produced by the country and has been given the ultimate honour by the Mumbai Cricket Assocation (MCA).
The Mumbai cricket governing body confirmed on Tuesday (April 15), after their 85th annual general meeting, that the venue will have a 'Rohit Sharma stand.' MCA also decided to name one stand each after ex-International Cricket Council (ICC) President Sharad Pawar and former India captain Ajit Wadekar.
"Another key resolution passed during the AGM was the approval of the naming of stands at Wankhede Stadium - a proposal initially put forward by Mr Milind Narvekar and seconded by Mr Jitendra Awhad. The house unanimously approved the stand namings," said a MCA statement.
"Today’s decisions reflect our deep respect for the pillars of Mumbai cricket and our determination to build an even stronger future. These stands and this lounge shall forever echo the legacy of those who built Mumbai’s cricketing spirit — brick by brick, run by run," said MCA president Ajinkya Naik.
Meanwhile, the match day office at the MCA Pavillion will be named after former MCA President Amol Kale, who passed away last year.

Which Stand Will Be Renamed at Wankhede Stadium?

  • Grand Stand Level 3: Shri Sharad Pawar Stand
  • Grand Stand Level 4: Ajit Wadekar Stand
  • Divecha Pavilion Level 3: Rohit Sharma Stand
  • Rohit Sharma Joins Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar

While Mumbai is not just the most successful team in Indian domestic cricket, it has also consistently produced some of the finest cricketers in the world. In most eras, the Indian team has had a strong presence of Mumbai players. However, the special distinction of having a stand named after them at the Wankhede is rare. Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Vijay Merchant are other cricketers with a stand named after them at the iconic venue.
Wadekar will also get a stand named after Rohit. The ex-Mumbai star is among India's greatest captains having kickstarted the team's rise to global domination after leading the Indian team to historic Test series victories in West Indies and England in 1971.
As far as Rohit is concerned, he is the leading run-getter for India in T20is and fourth highest in ODIs. Over the last year, he captained the Men in Blue to glory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy. He is only of three Indian captains after MS Dhoni (2007 T20 WC, 2011 WC, and 2013 CT) and Kapil Dev (1983 WC) to win an ICC tournament.
