England suffered another upset against Afghanistan in an ICC defeat and crashed out from the 2025 Champions Trophy on Wednesday (February 26). Chasing a target of 326 in the must-win game, England got bowled out for 317. Joe Root was the only batsman who stood tall and he slammed a century in the unsuccessful chase.
Harry Brook failed to deliver and scored 25 off 21 balls. Much was expected from Brook, who has a good record in Tests in Pakistan. But he has managed 28 runs in two innings in the ICC event.
Sunil Gavaskar took a sly dig at Brook following his another below-par knock and cheekily asked him if the lights in Lahore were ok or not. "I just saw Harry Brook's dismissal. Are the lights in Lahore ok or not? Because when he played in Kolkata, he said that he couldn't see the ball properly because of smog. That's why I'm asking. I hope the Lahore lights are fine? Because the catching practice he gave to get out… I don't know," the India legend said on the Sports Central YouTube channel.
During the India-England series, Brook blamed Kolkata's smog for struggling against spin. "I didn't face Bishnoi but Chakravarthy is an exceptionally good bowler. He's tough to pick. I think actually with the smog the other night, it was a lot harder to pick as well. Hopefully, the air is a bit clearer here and we can see the ball a bit easier," he said.
Gavaskar reminded the England batter of his comment after yet another below-par score. England have been ruled out of the 2025 CT. Though they can decide South Africa's fate. The two teams are scheduled to square off on Saturday (March 1).
Afghanistan, on the other hand, will take on Australia in a must-win match on Friday (February 28). A defeat will end Afghanistan's campaign.
