Younis Khan mentored Afghanistan after refusing to work with the Pakistan cricket team, claimed Rashid Latif. Khan, who is currently working as the mentor of the Afghan cricket team, was appointed to the role just before the start of the ongoing Champions Trophy.
After Afghanistan knocked England out of the Champions Trophy with a memorable win, Latif, speaking during a 'Haarna Mana Hai' show on Geo News, was asked about Younis Khan's decision to work with the Afghanistan team.
"Younis Khan said no to Pakistan cricket to work with Afghanistan. There will be no financial benefits here," Latif revealed.
Why was Younis Khan appointed as Afghanistan's mentor?
"Since the Champions Trophy is being held in Pakistan, it was required to assign a talented and experienced player as a mentor from the hosting country. We already had efficient experience with hosting countries' mentors in ODI World Cup 2023 and T20I World Cup 2024," ACB chief executive Naseeb Khan had said at the time of appointment.
This is not the first time Afghanistan has hired mentors from the host country. During the 2023 ODI World Cup, they hired former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja, and for the 2024 T20 World Cup, they roped in West Indies legend Dwayne Bravo.
Meanwhile, it was Ibrahim Zadran's majestic 177 and pacer Azmatullah Omarzai's fifer that trumped Joe Root's masterful hundred, as the Afghanistan registered a thrilling eight-run win against England.
Wins by Afghanistan against established Test nations are no longer seen as upsets and recent performances on the world stage mean they cannot afford to fly under the radar.
