Kevin Pietersen has joined Delhi Capitals (DC) as their mentor for IPL 2025. The franchise made the mega announcement on Thursday (February 27). The appointment marks Pietersen's return to DC after a decade. He was associated with the franchise from 2012 to 2014. Pietersen also led DC during his stint. Under him, DC managed to win only 1 out of 11 matches in IPL 2014.
This will be Pietersen's first stint as the coach. He showed interest in becoming Team India's batting coach. The BCCI never invited applications for the position.
At DC, Pietersen will work along with head coach Hemnag Badani, director of cricket Venugopal Rao, assistant coach, Matthew Mott and bowling coach, Munaf Patel.
DC will also have a new captain in the upcoming season. Axar Patel, KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis seem to be leading contenders for the top job. Axar assisted Suryakumar Yadav in the five-match T20I series against England. He has never done captaincy in IPL.
Rahul has captained Team India in all three formats. He is the former captain of Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants. du Plessis captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru from IPL 2022 to 2024. He is the former captain of South Africa.
Delhi Capitals released Rishabh Pant
Delhi Capitals took a shocking decision before the IPL 2025 mega-auction and they released Rishabh Pant. DC were keen to re-sign Rishabh and they used their RTM card after he was bought by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for Rs 20.75 crore.
LSG were also keen to buy Rishabh and they matched DC's bid, thus purchasing the wicketkeeper-batsman. Rishabh created history at the auction and became the costliest player in the league's history. LSG have already appointed him as their new captain.
Interestingly, DC bought Rahul later during the proceedings. Rahul captained LSG from IPL 2022 to 2024. DC and LSG have never won the IPL title.
