Liverpool strengthened their grip on the Premier League title with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle, extending their lead at the top to 13 points.

With second-placed Arsenal held to a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest, Arne Slot’s side capitalised at Anfield, delivering a clinical performance despite Slot serving a touchline ban.

Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring in the 11th minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse to scuff a shot past Nick Pope.

Alexis Mac Allister sealed the win in the second half, curling Mohamed Salah’s pass into the top corner as Liverpool fans chanted, "We're going to win the league."

Newcastle, missing top scorer Alexander Isak due to a groin injury, struggled in attack. Callum Wilson, making his first league start of the season, squandered a clear-cut opportunity in the first half.

The result leaves Newcastle sixth, three points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, while Liverpool edge closer to a 20th English league title with only 10 games remaining.

Midfield duo shine as Liverpool dominate

Szoboszlai’s influence was evident throughout the match. The Hungarian midfielder not only netted his fifth league goal of the season but also controlled the tempo, winning more tackles than any other Liverpool player.

Mac Allister, equally instrumental, started and finished the move for his goal, threading a pass to Salah before ghosting into space to finish with precision.

Salah, despite failing to score, was a constant menace on the right, providing his 42nd league goal involvement of the season.

With six of their remaining 10 fixtures at Anfield, Liverpool are inching closer to securing the title.

Newcastle struggle without Isak

Newcastle’s lack of attacking threat was glaring in Isak’s absence. Wilson, deputising up front, appeared off the pace, missing a one-on-one with Alisson before firing another effort wide.

The Magpies also faltered defensively, leaving Szoboszlai and Mac Allister unmarked for their goals. With no timeline for Isak’s return, Newcastle’s push for a Champions League spot faces a tough challenge.

Eddie Howe’s side, still in the European mix, will seek redemption when they face Liverpool again in the Carabao Cup final on 16 March.
