Rohit Sharma could be rested vs New Zealand in Champions Trophy (Source: AP)
Indian captain Rohit Sharma is not a certain starter in the ICC Champions Trophy match against New Zealand on March 2. According to a report in Times of India, Rohit wasn't involved in any intense physical activity during India's training session at the ICC Academy in Dubai. There are speculations that India could rest Rohit Sharma from the New Zealand clash. For the unversed, Rohit Sharma picked up a hamstring niggle during the India vs Pakistan match on February 23. Rohit wasn't very comfortable when he came out to bat, but he brushed aside any serious fitness concerns.
While he confirmed he has a niggle, he played down it being a cause of concern. "Hamstring's okay at the moment," Rohit said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
If Rohit Sharma is rested, Shubman Gill could lead India against New Zealand. Gill is the vice-captain of the team and will be the first choice as India captain in the absence of Rohit Sharma. India would also have to make some changes to the playing XI. KL Rahul could be asked to open in place of Rohit Sharma while Rishabh Pant could be drafted into the team at number five.
India are set to take on New Zealand on March 2 at the Dubai International Stadium. The match is a dead rubber because India and New Zealand have already qualified for the semifinal, however, there are still a few things at stake during the game. The winner of the match will top Group A and will face the lower-ranked team from Group B.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has shown good form in the Champions Trophy. Even though he has not played a real big knock, he has given a brisk start to the team and put them in the driver's seat early in the match.
