KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Afghanistan beat England by eight runs
  • England have lost two games in a row
  • Dubai and Lahore will host the semi-final
England were knocked out of the 2025 Champions Trophy after defeat to Afghanistan in a virtual knockout clash in Group B on Wednesday (February 23) at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The rising Asian giants won the last-over thriller by eight runs to stay alive in the tournament.
With two defeats in a row after a five-wicket loss to Australia, England have no chance of making it to the semi-final anymore. Ahead of the last two league matches between Australia and Afghanistan (February 28) in Lahore and South Africa and England (March 1) in Karachi, three teams can still qualify.

How Can Afghanistan, Australia, and England Qualify For The Semi-Final Of The 2025 Champions Trophy?

Afghanistan - Afghanistan will enter the clash against Australia in a similar situation to the England clash as they will play another do-or-die match. If the Hasmatullah Shahidi-led side win that match, they will make to the semi-final of an ICC tournament for the second time in a row. However, if they lose, they will be knocked out. If the match is washed out, they are unlikely to qualify and will need England to beat South Africa by a massive margin that is bound to be out of reach.
Australia - Australia will also need to win against Afghanistan to qualify as they currently have three points on the board. Their Net Run Rate (+0.475) is significantly worse than South Africa and hence, they will need England to beat the Proteas by a huge margin to qualify if they face defeat against Afghanistan. Australia will qualify if the match is washed out.
South Africa - South Africa's stunning Net Run Rate (+2.140) with three points on the board means they have all but secured qualification. The Proteas are likely to qualify for the semi-final even if they lose against England. The Temba Bavuma-led side will be part of the knockout stages unless they face a heavy defeat, which is set to be an unrealistic margin.
Champions Trophy Group B Standings

Australia 3 1 0 1 +0.475
Afghanistan 2 1 1 0 -0.990
England 0 0 2 0 -0.305
