Dhoni's arrival at the Chennai sparked massive buzz around the cricket fraternity with immense excitement around the nation to see India's 2011 World Cup-winning captain return to action after a gap of a year.
Speculation around Dhoni's future in the IPL has been going on since his international retirement in 2020. While the ex-CSK skipper has been questioned if he will play the following season for the last five seasons, he is yet to hang up his boots. Despite being the oldest active player in the league, Dhoni continues to impress behind the stumps and remains as dangerous with the bat in the slog as ever.
Many speculated Dhoni would hang up his boots after the 2024 season heading into a new cylce. However, the 43-year-old was retained ahead of the 2025 mega auction as an uncapped player for a salary of just Rs. 5 crore.
Dhoni's future will once again be a burning question heading in the 2025 IPL. With a month to go for the tournament to begin, the five-time IPL-winning skipper's T-Shirt has ignited retirement discussions. Social media users were quick to decipher that a Morse code inscribed over Dhoni's apparel meant 'One Last Time.' Many social media users wondered if the CSK star hinted at retirement at the 2025 season ends.
Dhoni is the third oldest player to play the IPL history only behind Brad Hogg and Pravin Tambe. If the CSK legend plays the entire three-year cycle, he will become the oldest player in the league's history in the 2027 season.
Dhoni has been part of CSK since the inaugural season in 2008 and played for them in every season the franchise has participated in the competition. The former India wicket-keeper batter also played for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017 when the Chennai-based franchise were suspended for two years.
Dhoni led CSK from the first season in 2008 to 2023. Under his captaincy, the Men in Yellow lifted the title in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. Dhoni stepped down from the role ahead of the 2024 season and handed over the top job to Ruturaj Gaiwkad.
CSK will kickstart their campaign in the 2025 IPL with a clash against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 23.
