Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam has come under intense scrutiny following his team's early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, while former Pakistani cricketers have openly criticised his performances, several Indian cricketing greats have stepped forward to defend him.

Babar’s struggles in Champions Trophy

Pakistan, the tournament hosts, were eliminated after defeats to New Zealand and India in the group stage. Babar's performances were closely analysed, with his 64 off 90 balls against New Zealand deemed too slow in a steep chase of 321.

Against India, he managed just 23 runs before being dismissed by Hardik Pandya. His form across formats has been inconsistent, with his last ODI century coming against Nepal in August 2023.

Amidst the Champions Trophy run, Babar has come under severe criticism from ex-players in Pakistan. Shoaib Akhtar called Babar Azam a 'fraud'' in a scathing review of his performances.

Sidhu urges respect for Babar

Former India cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has spoken out against the criticism aimed at Babar, calling for respect for the 29-year-old batter.

Sidhu, known for his colourful analogies and passionate commentary, likened Babar’s situation to that of a general who withstood attacks from strangers but was emotionally shattered when betrayed by his own men.

“Babar Azam is also a human being. Virat Kohli has failed, and Babar is no different. Respect Babar Azam instead of throwing stones at him. Leave him alone and let him play for the country. He is your hero, and he deserves respect,” Sidhu said.

Sidhu’s remarks were a direct response to the growing criticism in Pakistan, where fans and experts have accused Babar of playing selfishly. The former Indian opener drew parallels to Kohli’s lean patch in recent years.

“He has made runs for you and will play for you for a long time. Learn to respect him. Don’t just stand afar and throw stones at him,” Sidhu said, drawing comparisons to Virat Kohli’s early struggles.

Gavaskar’s technical advice for Babar

Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has also weighed in, offering Babar technical advice to improve his form.

Speaking on former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali’s YouTube channel, Gavaskar suggested that Babar should adjust his stance to enhance his movement at the crease.

“If he reduces the width between his legs while standing at the crease, he will get two advantages: better movement forward and backward, and an improved ability to judge bounce,” Gavaskar said.

He added that minor technical adjustments could help Babar rediscover his best form, which would be a positive for cricket fans worldwide.

Pakistan’s next match

Despite their elimination, Pakistan will face Bangladesh in their final Champions Trophy fixture on Wednesday, 26 February.

Babar Azam will look to regain his rhythm as speculation over his future as captain continues.
