The 2025 Champions Trophy match between Australia and South Africa is facing a serious threat of a washout as the toss has been delayed in the vital Group B at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. With no play possible till 1.5 hours of the scheduled start time, the match will not be a full 50-over match anymore.
Both teams started their campaign with victories and had a golden chance to reach the semi-final. The winners of today's match will have foot in the semi-final. However, if the match is washed out, it will leave both teams vulnerable ahead of their final group-stage match. For those unversed, South Africa beat Afghanistan by 107 runs at Karachi. Meanwhile, Australia defeated arch-rivals England by five wickets following a world record run-chase.
What Happens If Match Is Washed Out?
If the match is washed out, both teams will share one each. There is no reserve day in place for any group stage match. Hence, all attempts will be made to ensure play is possible. Both teams need to bat a minimum of 20 overs for a result.
However, the knockout stages (both semi-finals and the final) have a reserve day in place. For all three matches, the match can be played again on the next day if needed. The two semifinals are scheduled for March 4 and 5 in Dubai and Lahore, while the final will be played in either of the two cities on March 9. Hence, March 5, 6, and 10 will act as the reserve day.
In all three matches, all attempts will be made to finish the match on the scheduled day of the match. If a 20-over match is not possible, then only a reserve day will be used. In case the match is stopped midway, it will continue from the same point on the next day.
If the match is washed out on the reserve day, the team that topped the group will qualify for the final. If the same situation happens in the final, the two teams will share the trophy.
