KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Ellyse Perry did not bat or bowl in the super over
- Perry made the joint-third highest individual score in WPL history
- Perry also took one wicket after bowling for the first time this season
The clash between Royal Challenger Bengaluru (RCB) and UP Warriorz on Monday (February 24) will go down in history books as the first-ever Super Over in the history of the Women's Premier League WPL) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
RCb's tactics in the super-over raised major questions as star all-rounder Ellyse Perry neither batter nor bowled for the defending champions. Earlier in the day, Perry was the star performer for the Bengaluru-based franchise with the bat with a knock of 90 runs in 56 balls, which is the joint third-highest individual score in the history of the cash-rich league.
Later, she bowled for the first time this season and impressed once again with one wicket in two overs while conceding just 10 runs. She got the wicket of Shweta Sehrawat, who made a 25-ball 31.
Why Did Ellyse Perry Did Not Bowl Or Bat In Super Over?
While no reason has been given by RCB on Perry's absence from the super over, it is worth noting that Smriti Mandhana did say at the toss that she was only available to bowl a few overs. Although, an official word is awaited, it is possible that she was not allowed to bowl more than two overs on the night.
It is worth noting that Perry was not allowed to bat in the first three matches of the season after suffering a hip injury during the Women's Ashes Test between Australia and England at the MCG last month.
On the batting front, it was likely a tactical call by RCB to send skipper Mandhana and Richa Ghosh to the middle. As the Bengaluru-based franchise did not lose a wicket, it is not clear, who their third batter would have been and if Perry was chosen.

Talking about the match, UP scored nine runs in the super over bowled by Kim Garth despite losing one wicket. RCB made just four runs from a stunning over by Sophie Ecclestone.
Ecclestone was the star of the show for UP with the bat as she made a knock of 33 runs in 19 balls to ensure the match ends with scores level from a situation when RCB appeared heavy favourites to win the match. With three overs left, the Deepti Sharma-led side had lost eight wickets and needed 42 runs to win.
