Rachin Ravindra made a remarkable comeback from injury and created history during New Zealand's second match in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh on Monday (February 24) at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium with a memorable century in his comeback.
After missing New Zealand's last three matches including the tournament opener against Pakistan after suffering a freak injury while fielding in the opening game of the tri-series in Lahore against the Men in Green earlier this month.
Rachin replaced Daryl Mitchell in the playing XI, who missed out due to an illness. The 25-year-old walked out to bat at number four after the Black Caps made a forgettable start to their run-chase as Will Young and Kane Williamson departed for single-digit scores.
Rachin brought New Zealand back on track in the chase with a solid 57-run partnership for the third wicket with Devon Conway. Later, Tom Latham and the left-handed batter put up a 129-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Ravindra was dismissed after making a knock of 112 in just 105 balls while Latham made a 76-ball 55 to set the stage for a comfortable victory for the Black Caps which will ensure they qualify for the semi-finals alongside India.
Rachin Ravidra Creates History
Ravindra's ton etched his name in the history books as the first player in history to score a century on debut in both the Cricket World Cup and the Champions Trophy. The youngster scored a century against England in the opening match of the 2023 World Cup at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, which was his debut in the marquee event of ODI cricket.
In cricket history, there have been 19 players to score a century on their ODI World Cup debut and 15 to do on their maiden appearance in the Champions Trophy but Rachin is the only common player on both list.
