Former Pakistan cricket captain Mohammad Hafeez, who played a pivotal role in Pakistan's 2017 Champions Trophy final win against India, has expressed frustration following Pakistan's recent disappointing loss to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Hafeez, speaking during PTV's coverage of the tournament, urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to part ways with the country's current pace trio: Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf.
Despite once being considered the backbone of Pakistan’s pace attack, Hafeez believes the trio has repeatedly let the team down in crucial moments. In their opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025 against New Zealand, the trio gave away over 200 runs. In the high-pressure match against India in Dubai, they failed to defend a modest target of 242 runs, allowing the Indian batters to take control of the game and chase down the total comfortably.
Hafeez didn't hold back in his criticism, pointing out the consistent failures of the trio across multiple tournaments. "Since the Asia Cup in 2023, we were expecting this trio—Shaheen, Naseem, and Haris—to deliver trophies for us. But they’ve been unsuccessful. The 2023 World Cup, a disaster. The 2022 T20 tournament in Melbourne, a disaster. And now, this Champions Trophy, another failure," he said, visibly frustrated by their repeated underperformance.
Hafeez’s comments have added to the growing calls for a change in Pakistan’s fast-bowling attack, as the Men in Green struggle to regain their form on the international stage.
