24th February marks a special day in the history of Indian cricket, as it was on this day in 2010 that Sachin Tendulkar completed the unthinkable and became the first player in the history of ODI cricket to score a double century against South Africa in a match at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior.
Before Tendulkar's incredible feat, Saeed Anwar's knock of 194 against India in Chennai stood as the record for the highest individual score in ODI cricket history for 13 years. Months before Tendulkar's effort, Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry also put up 194 on the board in a match against Bangladesh. Prior to Anwar's effort, Viv Richards's knock of 189 against England in 1984 stood as the record for more than a decade too.
On the 15th anniversary of Tendulkar's remarkable feat, the Indian cricket legend got a surprise from a few former India teammates led by Yuvraj Singh. After a practice session of the Indian Masters team in the ongoing International Masters League (IML), Tendulkar cut a cake.
Tendulkar joked about cutting the cake with pads still on as he remained not-out on that day. For those unversed, he made 200 runs in 147 balls at a strike-rate of 136.05 as India posted a huge total of 401 on the board in a 153-run victory.
Yuvraj was all praise for Tendulkar and claimed he learned how to stay humble from the 2011 World Cup winner.
"First man to get a double hundred. For him, it was just another day in the park, but we have learnt to always be humble from him. He is always there first," said Yuvraj in a video shared by Sachin on his X account.
"Nice surprise filled with dher sara pyaar! Thank you Team," Sachin captioned his post.
The Indian Masters team won their opening game in the IML against Sri Lanka. Alongside Yuvraj, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, and Ambati Rayudu are part of the Tendulkar-led side. They will play their second match of the tournament on Tuesday (February 25) against England Masters at Navi Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium.
Sachin's double ton set became a trendsetter as to date there have been 11 more instances of a double ton in ODI cricket, including three times by Rohit Sharma. Virender Sehwag, Ishan Kishan, and Shubman Gill have also reached the milestone.
