Pakistan suffered their second defeat of the ICC Champions Trophy as they lost to India by six wickets at the Dubai International Stadium. Pakistan were let down by the batters who could only post a paltry 241 on the board, courtesy of 62 by Saud Shakeel. The fearsome pace attack comprising Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah also looked ineffective as India thrashed Pakistan by six wickets, with Virat Kohli scoring his 51st ODI century. This was Pakistan's second defeat in two games, having previously lost to New Zealand in the opening clash.
The defeat to India has almost ended their hopes of reaching the Champions Trophy semifinal, however, mathematically it is still possible. For Pakistan to qualify for the semis, they would need New Zealand to lose badly to Bangladesh and India. They would also need a win over Bangladesh in their final league game. In that case, all three teams will be tied on points and the team with the better run rate will qualify for the semifinal along with India.
Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan is not too optimistic about his team's chances and said that the Champions Trophy campaign is over for Pakistan. "For now, we can say that it's over. This is the truth," the Pakistan captain said.
Rizwan said he doesn't like depending on other results to qualify for the semifinal. He accepted that his team didn't play good cricket and said they deserve to be in the position they are.
"As a captain, I honestly don't like this. If you can win, then do it. If you can't, then don't worry about it. I don't care if you are sitting in someone else's shadow.
"I don't care if you are outside the tournament or in it. Yes, New Zealand has defeated us; India has defeated us. We accept it. We can play well; we can play badly. We can't say that we should stay on someone else's side. Allah has made this a chance, we can't say anything about it."
Rizwan added that the qualification is not in their hands, saying that he'll be keeping an eye on how other teams play. "In the next match, we'll see what Bangladesh does with New Zealand, what New Zealand does with India, and what we do. It's a long journey. Yes, we have hope and belief in Allah. Our dependence on the Champions Trophy has now come on other teams." Pakistan are the defending champions.
