India all but ended hosts Pakistan's campaign in the 2025 Champions Trophy as the Men in Blue sealed a comfortable six-wicket victory over the defending champions in the blockbuster clash on Sunday (February 23) at the Dubai International Stadium with Virat Kohli producing a vintage run-chase masterclass.
For the 12th time in a row, India lost a toss in an ODI game as Pakistan chose to bat first. Babar Azam's poor run of form continued as he once again failed against India with a knock of 23 in 26 balls. Iman-Ul-Haq's comeback to the team was a forgettable one as he was run-out after just 10 runs in 26 balls.
Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel rebuilt the innings for the Men in Green but their scoring rate earned criticism. The duo put up 104 runs in 144 balls. However, both failed to convert the knock into a big one as Shakeel made 62 runs in 76 balls while Rizwan made a 77-ball 46. Khushdil Shah played another vital cameo (38 of 39 balls) to help Pakistan post a total of 241 on the board.
Kuldeep Yadav was India's highest wicket-taker with three wickets to his name with three wickets to his name. However, Hardik Pandya probably bowled the best spell as he took two wickets including the big scalps of Babar and Saud while giving away just 31 runs in eight overs. Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Harshit Rana took one wicket each. No Indian bowler had an economy rate higher than six.
In reply, Rohit Sharma attempted to give India another quick start but a stunning delivery from Shaheen Afridi cut short his knock. The Indian captain made 20 runs in 15 balls. Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill put up a 71-run stand for the second wicket. Gill looked set for his fifth consecutive 50+ score in ODIs but a stunning delivery from Abrar Ahmed sent him packing after making a fluent knock of 46 in 52 balls.
However, Pakistan failed to capitalise on the chance as Shreyer Iyer and Virat Kohli ensured India cruised toward the target. The duo put up a partnership of 114 runs in just 128 balls. Shreyas departed after making 56 runs in 67 balls while Hardik Pandya made a six-ball eight.
Kohli scored the winning runs, which also ensured he completed his 51st ODI century and 82nd international ton. The star Indian batter remained unbeaten with a knock of 100 in 111 balls as India won the match with 51 balls to spare.
