Mohammed Shami made a forgettable start to India's 2025 Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday (February 23) after he bowled the first over of the match following Mohammad Rizwan's decision to bat first after winning the toss.
Shami bowled the first over of the match and gave away six runs, which in a normal situation would not have come as a cause of concern for India. However, Shami ended up bowling 11 deliveries to finish the over. He bowled five wides, and Pakistan only made one run with the bat.

Mohammed Shami Equals Dubious Record

The 11-ball over by Shami is the joint longest by an Indian bowler in ODI cricket history. Shami has equalled Zaheer Khan's record from the infamous first over in the 2003 Cricket World Cup final defeat against Australia at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Irfan Pathan also took 11 balls to finish an over in an ODI game against West Indies at Sabina Park in Jamaica in 2006
Shami is the first Indian to bowl five wides in an over in ODI cricket history. Zaheer's opening over had four wides and a no-ball. Meanwhile, Pathan's over, which was also the first of the match had two no-balls and three overs. There have been eight instances of an Indian bowler delivering four wides in an over with Zaheer responsible for four of them.

Shami's 11-ball over is the third-longest in Champions Trophy history behind Bangladesh's Hasibul Hossain (2000) and Zimbabwe's Tinashe Panyangara (2004), who both bowled 13-ball overs.
Shami also faced an injury scare as he called the physio mid-way during his third over of the day and walked off the field after completing that over. However, he came back after spending some time in the dressing room and resumed his spell.
