After Mohammed Rizwan won the toss and chose to bat in the blockbuster India-Pakistan clash on Sunday (February 23) in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy at the Dubai International Stadium, the Men in Blue set a dubious world record.
For the second time in a row in the tournament, Indian captain Rohit Sharma lost the toss. Earlier, Bangladesh had also decided to bat first in India's first match which the 2013 champions won by six wickets after a tricky run-chase in a low-scoring clash.

India Set Dubious World Record

With Rohit Sharma making the wrong call in Dubai, India has set a dubious world record as they have now lost the toss in 12 consecutive ODI matches. The streak started on 19th November, 2023, when India lost the toss in the 2023 Cricket World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad.
In December 2023, India lost the toss in all three games against South Africa under KL Rahul's captaincy in a series in which the Men in Blue won 2-1. Later, the two-time world champions played an ODI series in August 2024 against Sri Lanka under Rohit's leadership and lost the toss in all three matches. This series also marked India's first bilateral series against Sri Lanka in 27 years with a 2-0 defeat.
Earlier this month, India lost the toss in all three matches against England in a home series despite the Rohit Sharma-led side securing a 3-0 whitewash.
The previous record was held by the Netherlands, who lost the toss in 11 consecutive games between March 2011 and August 2013.
Talking about the match, India decided to make no change to their playing XI from the victory against Bangladesh. Despite a heavy defeat against New Zealand, Pakistan has made just one change, with Imam-Ul-Haq replacing Fakhar Zaman. For those unversed, Fakhar suffered an injury in the tournament opener and has been ruled out of the competition. A defeat tonight will mean the Men in Green no longer have their destiny in their own hands.
