India defeated Bangladesh by six wickets in their Champions Trophy opener at the Dubai International Stadium. The cornerstone of the win was Mohammed Shami with the ball, who picked five wickets to help India bowl out Bangladesh for 228, and Shubman Gill, who scored his eighth ODI century to take India over the line in a tricky chase.
Gill has been magnificent for India and scored a century and two fifties in the ODI series against England. He continued the form in the Champions Trophy and scored unbeaten 101 against Bangladesh. The pitch was not easy to bat, but Gill kept India afloat. Naturally a free-flowing batter, Gill reached his century in 125 balls, which was his slowest ODI hundred.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra was mighty pleased with Gill's remarkable knock and called it his best ODI hundred. Chopra also said that fans call Gill a Prince but he is no less than a King.
"Was this Gill's best ODI innings? This was his eighth century but his first in an ICC event, and ICC centuries are different because the pressure is different. I think this is his best ODI hundred, although he has scored a double century as well," Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
"We call him prince but he is no lesser than the king. He understands the template of ODI cricket so well. ODI cricket doesn't happen that much. However, if he plays say 250 matches, he will finish as one of the greatest ODI batters ever. This century was definitely the best of his career. Considering the potential he has, especially from the ODI cricket perspective, the sky is the limit," Chopra added.

Shubman Gill Nears Massive Feat

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill is nearing a massive feat in ODI cricket. Gill so far has scored 2688 runs in 51 innings, including eight centuries and 15 half-centuries. He needs another 312 runs in five innings to break the record of fastest to 3000 ODI runs. The record is currently held by Hashim Amla who reached the milestone in 57 innings.
