India started their ICC Champions Trophy campaign with a big win over Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai. Chasing a target of 229 on a slow surface, India cruised to a win by six wickets. A fiery knock of 41 in 36 by Rohit Sharma and an unbeaten 101 by Shubman Gill ensured India cross the winning line without much trouble.
Meanwhile, the win helped Rohit Sharma create a massive world record. Rohit Sharma has been phenomenal as a captain for India. He first led India in 2017, however, it was in 2021-2022 when he took over the reins of Team India as all-format captain. Rohit helped India reach the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and WTC, however, the dreams were shattered in the final. But he ended the wait for an ICC title in 2024 when he led India to a win in the T20 World Cup.
The win over Bangladesh was Rohit's 100th win as captain in international cricket and he became the joint fastest captain along with Ricky Ponting to win 100 matches with a win percentage of over 70. So far, Rohit has led India in 138 matches, winning 100 and losing 33 games. Three games ended as a draw while one match was a tie. Rohit's wins have come at a win percentage of over 70. Out of the 100 wins, 12 have come in Tests, 38 in ODIs and 50 in T20Is. What differentiate Rohit from Ponting is that Rohit first led India after turning 30 while Ponting was appointed the captain at the age of 28 so Rohit is the only player in the world to win 100 matches after turning 30.
In terms of most wins in international cricket, Ricky Ponting tops the charts with 220 wins in 324 matches.
Rohit Second Fastest To 11,000 Runs
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma also became the second fastest to reach 11000 runs in ODI cricket. Rohit achieved the landmark in his 261st inning while Virat Kohli, the fastest to the landmark, reached the milestone in 222 innings.
