Explained! Why Shakib Al Hasan Is Not Part Of Bangladesh Squad For Champions Trophy (Source: AP)

Bangladesh are without veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This is the first time since 2004 that Bangladesh are playing an ICC event without the Shakib. The all-rounder announced his retirement from T20I and Test cricket, but he expressed his wish to continue playing ODI cricket for the country. However, Shakib's name was missing when Bangladesh announced the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy.

Why Shakib Al Hasan Is Not Playing ICC Champions Trophy?

The primary reason why Bangladesh didn't pick Shakib Al Hasan in the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy is because he was banned from bowling due to illegal action. If Bangladesh had to play Shakib, they could have only used him as a better. The veteran's form with the bat wasn't great across formats in recent times thus Bangladesh decided to move on with Shakib Al Hasan. The snub could well mark the end of Shakib Al Hasan's career as a cricketer. He will go down as one of the greatest Bangladesh players, with over 14000 runs and 700+ wickets across formats.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat against India. The move left many surprised as chasing teams have done well at the venue, especially with the dew factor in the second innings. India made two changes from the XI that played the third ODI vs England and included Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammad Shami, with Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakravarty missing out.
