- Rohit Sharma dropped a catch of Jaker Ali
- India are playing three spinners in their XI
Axar Patel experienced heartbreak after a near-dream first over in the 2025 Champions Trophy during India's clash against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium. The star all-rounder almost had a hat trick, but a dropped catch from Rohit Sharma denied him the unique chance.
Axar was called into the attack by Rohit in the 9th over of the match after the Indian pacers wreaked havoc by taking three wickets in the first eight overs, with Mohammed Shami striking twice and Harshit Rana also getting an early wicket. Axar had an immediate impact as he dismissed Tanzid Hasan (25 of 25) on his second delivery of the spell. The 31-year-old dismissed veteran Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim for a golden duck.
On his hat-trick delivery, Axar bowled the perfect delivery and forced an outside edge from Jaker Ali, which appeared destined to land into Rohit Sharma's hands at first slip. However, the Indian captain, who is among the best catchers in world cricket, dropped a sitter to the shock of the Indian team.
Rohit's dropped catch did not just deny Axar a maiden hat trick of his international career but also a series of world records and feats never achieved by an Indian.

Records Axar Patel Missed On After Hat-Trick Denial
1) First Spinner In Champions Trophy History To Take A Hat-Trick - Axar Patel would have been the first spinner from any team in the world to take a hat-trick in the Champions Trophy. In the 27-year-old history of the marquee event, Jerome Taylor is the only player to achieve the unique feat. The West Indies pacer achieved the feat against Australia in the 2006 edition in a match at Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium (CCI).
2) First Asian Player In Champions Trophy History To Take Hat-Trick: If Axar had got the hat-trick, he would have been just the second player after Taylor to take a hat-trick in the history of the Champions Trophy but also the first player from any Asian country.
3) First Debutant To Take Hat-Trick In ICC ODI Event: While 12 players including 11 in the ODI World Cup have taken a hat-trick in ICC ODI events, Axar would have been the first debutant to do so. This is the first time in his career Axar is playing a match in an ICC event in the 50-over format. Although he was part of the Men In Blue's 2015 world Cup squad, he did not play a single match. The spin-bowling all-rounder was also named in the 2023 World Cup squad but an injury ruled him out of the tournament.
4) First Indian Spinner To Take ICC Event Hat-Trick:Axar would have become the first Indian spinner to take a hat trick in an ICC event. Over the years, Chetan Sharma (vs New Zealand 1987 World Cup at Nagpur) and Mohammed Shami (2023 World Cup vs Afghanistan at Southampton) are the only Indian players to achieve the unique feat in a multi-team global event. In fact, Kuldeep Yadav (twice) is the only Indian spinner to take an ODI hat trick. No spin bowler from India has taken a hat trick in T20Is yet.
