(L-R) Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Rizwan: Will Fakhar Zaman Play the ICC Champions Trophy Match vs India? Pakistan Captain Rizwan Provides Concerning Update (Source: AP)
Pakistan got their ICC Champions Trophy campaign off to the worst possible start as they suffered a crushing 60-run defeat to New Zealand in the opening game. Will Young and Tom Latham scored centuries to help New Zealand post a daunting 320-5 in 50 overs before a clinical display with the ball meant that Pakistan were bowled out for 260 and suffered a crushing defeat. The game was done and dusted in the powerplay as New Zealand didn't allow Pakistan batters to break free, with the hosts scoring just 22 runs.
Fakhar Zaman Suffers Injury
Pakistan suffered a big blow on the second ball of the match as Fakhar Zaman picked up an injury. Zaman in an attempt to stop a boundary pulled a muscle. He was out of the field for most of the New Zealand innings and thus wasn't allowed to open the innings. Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel came out to open for Pakistan and struggled to get going. Fakhar came to bat after the fall of the second wicket and looked in searing pain at the crease. He was unable to take singles which added more pressure on Pakistan as the chase got stiffer.
Will Fakhar Zaman Play Against India?
Pakistan's next match is against India on February 23 and it'll be a must-win game for the Men in Green. A defeat to India will almost end their hopes of reaching the semifinals. Pakistan fans are concerned about Fakhar Zaman's fitness and whether the batter would be fit to play against India. Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan provided an update on Fakhar's status and revealed that the batter was in pain, adding that he hasn't got the test results yet and a clear picture will be out before the match.
"Not sure yet, he hasn't got his result yet. He is in some pain. We lost the momentum twice," Rizwan said on Fakhar Zaman.
