Will Young and Tom Latham etched their name in the history books during the inaugural match of the 2025 Champions Trophy between New Zealand and Pakistan with splendid tons which ensured the Black Caps crossed the 300-run mark to leave the home facing a tough task to get off a winning start.
Earlier, Mohammed Rizwan won the toss and chose to field first. Pakistan made a great start as Abrar Ahmed and Naseem Shah dismissed Devon Conway and Kane Williamson within the first 10 overs of the match. Later, Haris Rauf got the important wicket of Daryl Mitchell for just 10 runs.
Latham and Young brought New Zealand back on track with a 118-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Young scored the 5th ODI century of his career with a knock of 107 runs in 113 balls. After Young's departure, Latham accelerated and completed his ton in just 95 balls and remained unbeaten on the crease after making 118 runs in 104 balls as the 2000 champions posted a score of 320 on the board. Latham put up a 125-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Glenn Phillips, who scored a quick-fire 39-ball 61.

Will Young and Tom Latham' broke Sanath Jayasuriya's long-standing record of being the only player to score a ton against Pakistan in the history of the Champions Trophy. Jayasuriya had made a knock of 102 runs in 120 balls against the Men in Green to help Sri Lanka win the opening match of the 2002 edition by eight wickets at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Young and Latham are not just the first players in 23 years to score a century against Pakistan in the marquee tournament but have also set the record for the highest individual scores against the 2017 champions.

Young and Latham are the only fourth and fifth players respectively from New Zealand to score a century in the Champions Trophy after Nathan Astle (145 vs USA in 2004 at Oval), Chris Cairns (102 vs India, 2000 at Nairobi), and Kane Williamson (100 vs Australia, 2017 at Birmingham).
This is also only the fifth instance of a two players scoring a century in the same innings in a Champions Trophy match after Virender Sehwag-Sourav Ganguly (vs England, 2002), Chris Gayle-Dwayne Bravo (vs England, 2006), Shane Watson-Ricky Ponting (vs England, 2009), Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah (VS New Zealand, 2017).
