Kohli and Indian captain Rohit Sharma have the chance to become only the second player in history to win four ICC Events after Ricky Ponting, having previously won the tournament in 2013 alongside the 2011 Cricket World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup.
With the bat, Kohli has a remarkable record in the tournament despite never scoring a century. The 36-year-old has played 13 matches (12 innings) and scored 529 runs at an average of 88.16 with five half-centuries to his name. No other batter in history has scored more than 300 runs in the competition with an average of more than 80.
Virat Kohli Eyes History In Champions Trophy 2025
Kohli has the chance to set a huge world record in 2025 and become the tournament's all-time top scorer. Although Kohli is currently the 11th-highest run-getter in Champions Trophy history, none of the 10 players above him are active, giving the Indian cricket legend the golden chance to go top of the list.
Currently, Gayle is the leading run-getter in the history of the marquee competition, which started in 1998. The former West Indies opener, who lifted the trophy in 2004 scored 791 runs in 17 matches at an average of 52.73 with three centuries. Gayle, Shikhar Dhawan, and Sourav Ganguly are the only players to score three tons in the tournament's history.
Kohli needs 263 runs in the 2025 edition to go past Gayle and 271 runs to become the first player to score 800 runs in the competition. Kohli can break Shikhar Dhawan's record and become India's leading run-getter in the Champions Trophy if he scores more than 173 runs in this edition.

Kohli is also just 37 runs away from becoming only the third player in history to score 14,000 ODI runs after Kumar Sangakkara and Sachin Tendulkar. If and when he reaches the milestone, the ex-Indian captain will be the quickest to reach it. The Indian batting talisman is the only player in ODI cricket history to score 50 centuries.
He is the second-highest run-getter in ODI World Cup history behind Sachin with 1795 runs in 37 innings at an average of 59.83 with five tons. In the 2023 edition, he scored 765 runs and set the record for the most runs in a single edition.
Kohli played a key part in helping India win the 2013 edition, as he was the highest run-getter in the final against England, which was reduced to a 20-over match. The star batter's 34-ball 43 proved the difference in a low-scoring match.
