The BCCI has strict rules when it comes to Indian cricketers' participation in overseas leagues. An Indian player has to retire from international cricket, IPL and Indian domestic cricket to take part in the foreign leagues. A player cannot return to Indian cricket once he has participated in an overseas T20 league.
Due to the emergence of legends leagues and other T20 competitions, many Indian players have retired from Indian cricket of late. Dinesh Karthik, who quit Indian cricket after IPL 2024, has shared his take.
Karthik has backed the BCCI's decision and he is against Indian cricketers participating in overseas leagues till they are active in Indian cricket. Karthik represented Paarl Royals in the recently concluded SA20.
"I am a big believer that the IPL should be the crown jewel for the BCCI. It is at the moment. The IPL is the crown jewel of world cricket. For that to maintain their status quo as No. 1, I believe Indian cricketers shouldn't be allowed to play in overseas leagues unless they are retired," he said.
"The players can take their call, because if they feel they are done with IPL, they can move on to other leagues. I completely stand along with the BCCI on that front."
Karthik was a regular in IPL from 2008 to 2024. He played 257 matches and piled up 4842 runs in the T20 league. Karthik joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru as their batting coach and mentor after his retirement. He will make his coaching debut in IPL 2025.
Karthik, who made his India debut in 2004, was never a regular member of the national team. He made many comebacks from 2004 to 2022. His final India appearance came during the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Karthik was part of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team. He also won the 2013 Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni's captaincy.
