Dinesh Karthik may have retired from Indian cricket but he continues to play the game. The former India wicketkeeper-batsman was in action for Paarl Royals in SA20, which concluded recently. Karthik created history as he became the first Indian to take part in the South African league. The veteran player was also appointed the league's ambassador.
Karthik, who finished the league with 130 runs, broke MS Dhoni's record and went past him in the list of Indians with the most runs in the shortest format. Karthik has scored 7537 runs in 412 T20s while MS Dhoni has 7432 runs in 391 matches.
A week after the end of the league, Karthik reacted to overtaking Dhoni and said that he (Dhoni) would overtake him. Dhoni continues to play IPL and he will make his on-field return for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025.
"It's great to know that I overtook Dhoni, but it won't be long before he overtakes me. It really wouldn't trouble me much. I am happy for him to keep that record as the highest run-scorer as a wicketkeeper - I don't even know what exactly it is. It's okay, it's nice to know, but it's not something that I crave or really want," Karthik said.
Karthik and Dhoni made their T20 debuts in India's first-ever T20I against South Africa in 2006. Dhoni took over India's captaincy in 2007 and captained the team to a title win in the inaugural World Cup. Dhoni led India's T20I team till 2016.
Karthik never captained India in international cricket. However, he did lead India during practice matches before the T20 series against England in 2022. He was part of the 2022 T20 World Cup team.
Karthik is still an active cricketer but it isn't known when he will make his on-field return. He will be making his coaching debut in IPL 2025. Karthik was appointed Royal Challengers Bengaluru's batting coach and mentor for the upcoming season.
