The Australian media has yet again taken a dig at ace India batter Virat Kohli, more than a month after the end of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, saying that the latter was let go with 'one of the softest sanctions' for shoulder-barging Sam Konstas, even as Matthew Kuhnemann has to serve a bigger sentence for a reported bowling action.
Last week, Kuhnemann was reported for a suspected illegal bowling action during his brilliant performance in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka after players from the home side expressed concerns about his bowling.
Amidst the controversy, Australian cricket writer Ben Horne reignited the Kohli incident involving Konstas as he labelled ICC 'hypocrites'.
"Virat Kohli was hit with one of the softest sanctions of all time, yet match officials in Sri Lanka were happy to make an example out of a five-Test orthodox spinner over a marginal bowling action. They are completely different situations that don’t even belong in the same conversation other than the all too familiar running theme that the game’s governing body is sport’s biggest toothless tiger until an easy target (Kuhnemann) presents itself," Horne wrote in The Daily Telegraph.
Earlier, match officials’ report cited concerns about the legality of Kuhnemann's bowling action. He will undergo an Independent Assessment of his bowling action at an ICC Accredited Testing facility to determine the legality of his bowling action.
An illegal bowling action is defined by ICC as being where the player's elbow extends by an amount of over 15 degrees between their arm reaching the horizontal and the delivery being bowled. Match officials in international cricket use the naked eye and their experience to decide whether a bowler may be using an illegal action and if so, they will submit a report.
Kuhnemann picked up 16 wickets in just two matches against Sri Lanka at an impressive average of 17.18.
