KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- India have named three reserve players in the Champions Trophy Squad
- The trio have not travelled with the team to Dubai
- The Ranji Trophy semi-finals will start from Monday
After the rude shock of being dropped from India's Champions Trophy squad despite being named in the initial 15-man squad, Yashavsi Jaiswal suffered another setback as he will not be able to play Mumbai's 2024-25 Ranji Trophy semi-final clash against Vidarbha.
Jaiswal was named in Mumbai's squad after India omitted his name from the 15-man squad for the marquee event after Varun Chakravarthy took his place. While the 23-year-old has been named as a reserve player, he will not travel to Dubai with the team. Jaiswal is one of three non-substitutes alongside Shivam Dube and Mohammed Siraj. The players will only be called to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) if India suffer an injury blow and need a replacement.
According to a report by Times of India, Jaiswal will miss Mumbai's Ranji Trophy semi-final, which is scheduled to take place at the Vidarbha Cricket Assocation (VCA) Stadium in Nagpur, which will start on Monday (February 17) due to an ankle injury and instead report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) centre of excellence in Bengaluru.
Jaiswal took part in Mumbai's training session ahead of the big match in Nagpur but was reportedly uncomfortable while batting.
It remains to be seen if India name another non-travelling reserve for the Champions Trophy or wait for an eventuality when they need to send a replacement. It is not yet clear whether Jaiswal's injury is serious enough to rule him out of the entire event either, which will start on February 19 and end on March 9.
Jaiswal made his ODI debut against England in Nagpur but scored just 15 runs in 22 balls. He was dropped from the XI for the second game after Virat Kohli returned and was benched for the third match too.
Despite Jaiswal's absence, Mumbai has a star-studded squad that also includes Dube and is led by Ajinkya Rahane and also has the presence of Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav.
