'We Must Not Encourage This Superstardom': Ravichandran Ashwin Makes HUGE Statement On Rohit-Kohli (Photo credit: BCCI)

Ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has said that one must not encourage the superstardom prevalent in Indian cricket and the super-celebrities within the Indian team. He added that cricketers are not actors but just sportspersons and they shouldn't be treated like superstars. BCCI last month issued a 10-point policy to reduce the 'superstar culture' in the Indian cricket team.
According to this policy, there will be limits on the number of family members and personal staff that can accompany the cricketers on tours.
Moreover, there will be separate travel for cricketers and families, with exceptions needing approval from the head coach.
"It is important to normalise things in Indian cricket. We must not encourage this superstardom and super celebrities within the Indian cricket team," Ashwin said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
"We must normalise all these things going forward. We are cricketers. We are not actors or superstars. We are sportspersons and we must be someone that the common people should resonate with and can compare themselves with," Ashwin said.
The former India spinner added that for cricketers like Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, hitting centuries shouldn't be treated as achievements any more but business as usual, since they have already scored so many.
"For example, if you are a Rohit Sharma or a Virat Kohli, who have achieved so much. When you hit one more century, it is not just about your achievement anymore. It should be business as usual and our goals should be bigger than these achievements," Ashwin said.
The former India spinner raised concerns regarding the Indian team for the upcoming Champions Trophy and the team management's decision to include five spinners in the final team.
"Five spinners in Dubai? I don’t know. I think we are one spinner too many if not two. The two left-arm spinners are your best all-rounders alongside Hardik Pandya," Ashwin said.
