Former English allrounder David Lloyd has said that opposition batters should target Arshdeep Singh, who will be a crucial figure in India's pace attack with Jasprit Bumrah missing out on the tournament due to an injury. With Mohammed Shami just returning from rehab and Harshit Rana the only other pacer in the mix, a lot of eyes will be on Arshdeep.
Arshdeep has been the team's go-to bowler in T20s since his debut three years back. But this will be the first time that he will be playing in a 50-over ICC tournament and with Shami returning from an injury, a lot of responsibility will be on Arshdeep's young shoulders.
Lloyd has said that the opposition will have an opportunity to target the youngster due to his relative inexperience in ODIs.
“You are going to miss him (Bumrah). You can't get away from the fact that the best bowler in the world isn't playing, then you've got a problem," Lloyd said while speaking on TalkSPORT.
"If you are the opposition, test him out, really get into Arshdeep. This is not T20, this is not a little party, you've got to come back and come back again and that is something he won't be used to. If you are the opposition, you try and play on that, let's see what he's got," Lloyd added.
In 33 List A matches, Arshdeep has picked 55 wickets at an impressive economy of five. He was at his very best in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he finished as the highest wicket-taker, with 20 wickets in seven matches at an average of 18.25.
The Indian team management has risked the iffy fitness of Hardik Pandya and his ability to plug the gap as the third seamer behind Shami and Arshdeep or Rana.
Arshdeep has played five T20Is in Dubai, picking as many wickets.
