India suffered a massive setback in Test Cricket in the past few months. They were shockingly whitewashed 3-0 by New Zealand in a home series. This was followed by a 1-3 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under. India thus failed to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final for the first time in history. Rohit Sharma's credentials as captain came under scrutiny, especially after his poor run of form with the bat at as well. His future in red-ball cricket is now looking bleak with the important tour to England in June.
According to a report by PTI, Rohit Sharma is unlikely to be picked in the India Test squad again. In fact, it is current Test vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah who will captain India in the five-match series against England in June-July this year. Bumrah is expected to return to action in the IPL 2025 for Mumbai Indians.
"He (Jasprit Bumrah) can come back for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and then lead India in England as Rohit Sharma is unlikely to be picked for Tests again,” a source close to the proceedings told PTI.
Jasprit Bumrah has captained India on three occasions Tests. He led the team in India's historic 295-run against Australia in Perth, their only win in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25.

Why Jasprit Bumrah Was Left Out Of Champions Trophy 2025 Squad?

Jasprit Bumrah is currently out with a lower back injury and is set to miss the Champions Trophy 2025. The PTI report states that the main reason why he was left out of the squad is because he is yet to start bowling full tilt and it it was very difficult to get him match-fit in time for the Champions Trophy.
"It is understood that the main bone of contention was that Bumrah is yet to start bowling full tilt and those in the know of things said that it is very difficult to get match-fit in such a short time.
