Shubman Gill was on fire in the recently concluded ODI series against England where India defeated the Jos Buttler-led side 3-0. Gill smashed two fifties and a century to top the charts for the most runs in the series. Gill has been a prolific performer for India in ODIs and his form ahead of the Champions Trophy is a positive sign for the Rohit Sharma-led side. Gill has played 50 ODIs for India, scoring 2587 runs, with seven hundreds, including a double hundred, and 15 fifties at an average of over 60. In the third ODI, Gill became the fastest player to reach 2500 runs in ODIs, surpassing Hashim Alma, who reached the milestone in 53 innings. Given Gill's brilliant run in ODIs, he was named the vice-captain of the Indian team for the ICC Champions Trophy. The batter is seen as a potential replacement for Rohit Sharma as ODI captain.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill will have another massive record in sight during the ICC Champions Trophy. Gill is just 413 runs away from becoming the quickest player to reach 3000 runs in ODIs. The record is currently held by Hashim Amla who reached the milestone in his 57th innings so Gill has six innings to leapfrog South Africa great. Given Gill's form, the India batter could well break the record in the Champions Trophy where India will play a minimum of three matches, and a maximum of five games if they reach the final.
