(L-R) Shubman Gill, Babar Azam: Gill awaits Blockbuster News, Setback To Babar Azam Post Contrasting Results Ahead Of Champions Trophy (Source: AP)
Babar Azam did not have a great outing in the tri-series final against New Zealand. Babar was dismissed for just 29 runs and ended the series with a total of 62 runs in three matches. Babar Azam last scored a hundred in ODIs against Nepal in August 23. The failure in the tri-series final extended Babar Azam's century-less run in ODIs to 64 innings. Babar looked good during his stay at the crease but couldn't kick off as he was caught and bowled by Michael Bracewell. Babar Azam's form ahead of the Champions Trophy is a real worry for Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Babar Azam could suffer a big setback ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy. The horrible run in the tri-series could see Babar lose the top spot in the ICC rankings for batters to Shubman Gill. Babar currently holds the top spot with 786 rating points while Shubman Gill is second with 781 rating points. Gill had a great run in the three-match ODI series against England where he scored two fifties and a century in three matches. He also became the fastest batter to reach 2500 runs in ODIs. Given that the difference between Babar Azam and Gill is just six points, it is very likely that Gill will leapfrog Babar Azam in the ICC ODI rankings for batters.
Babar Azam Sets Big Record
Despite the lean run in the tri-series, Babar Azam was able to break a big record in ODI cricket. Babar became the joint fastest and fastest Asian to reach 6000 runs in ODI cricket. The record was held by Hashim Amla who reached the milestone in 123 innings. Babar matched the record during his 29 run knock in the tri-series final at the National Stadium in Karachi.
