Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Thursday (February 13) confirmed Rajat Patidar's appointment as their captain for IPL 2025. The rumours of Rajat taking over RCB's charge turned out to be true and he will make his IPL captaincy debut next month. Virat Kohli looked favourite to lead RCB once again as they did not buy a proven captaincy material in the mega-auction. But the franchise had other plans.
Social media was flooded with wishes for Rajat and RCB, who will aim to end their title drought. Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) X post following Rajat's appointment as captain raised eyebrows and it seems to be a dig at the franchise. Rajat is RCB's 8th captain.
CSK shared a pic of the captains who have led them so far. MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja were CSK's full-time captains while Ruturaj Gaikwad was named the captain before IPL 2024. Raina led the Yellow Army on a stand-in basis.
CSK and RCB have always been arch-rivals on the field but emotions involved in the game have gone up since IPL 2024. RCB defeated CSK in their last league stage match of IPL 2024 to make it to the second round. CSK entered the season as the defending champions but they failed to qualify for the playoffs. RCB crashed out after losing the eliminator.
2 teams yet to announce their captains
Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are two teams which haven't named their captains yet. DC released Rishabh Pant while KKR let go of Shreyas Iyer before the mega-auction. Rishabh will lead Luckonw Super Giants whereas Iyer will start a new chapter with Punjab Kings.
KL Rahul is one of the top contenders to take over DC's charge. One of Ajinkya Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer could be appointed KKR's captain. KKR will enter IPL 2025 as the defending champions.
