KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Matthew Breetzke created history in the tri-series
- Matthew Breetzke hit a record-breaking 150 in his debut vs New Zealand
- The South African star made 83 runs vs Pakistan
Despite South Africa's defeat to Pakistan in the tri-series clash at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi which meant they ended the tri-series also featuring New Zealand without winning a game, The Proteas had plenty of positives to take from the series with Matthew Breetzke standing out after making his ODI debut in their opening game against the Kiwis earlier this week.
After scripting history on debut with a knock of 150, Breetzke continued his red-hot form in his second ODI with a knock of 83 in 84 balls. The 26-year-old was one of three Proteas batters to make a score in the 80's during the innings alongside Temba Bavuma (82) and Heinrich Klaasen (87) in what is the first instance of the same happening in ODI cricket history.
Matthew Breetzke Creates History
Matthew Breetzke etched his name in history by becoming the first player in ODI cricket history to score more than 200 runs in his first two ODIs. The South African batter has made 233 runs in two innings at an average of 116.5. He broke a record set by West Indies cricket legend Desmond Haynes, who made 195 runs in his first two innings.
Haynes started his career with a splendid knock of 148 against Australia in Antigua in 1978. Later, he made 47 runs against India in his second ODI appearance in the 1979 World Cup at Birmingham.
Breeze is also the first player to score a century and a half-century in his first ODIs in history. He made 150 runs on his debut vs New Zealand on Monday (February 10) which is the highest individual score on ODI debut.

However, Breetzke's knocks in both games have gone in vain as South Africa were beaten by New Zealand and Pakistan by six and five wickets respectively as the Temba Bavuma side failed to defend 300+ totals in both games.
Despite the incredible start to his ODI career, Breetzke is not part of South Africa's side for the 2025 Champions Trophy. He was added to the squad for the tri-series to fill in for the absence of several first-choice players due to SA20 commitments.
