Varun Chakaravarthy continued his purple patch and took a five-fer in the 3rd T20I against England in Rajkot on Tuesday (January 28). The mystery spinner ran through England's middle order and didn't let them take advantage of the 76-run partnership between Jos Buttler and Ben Duckett.
Varun dismissed Buttler for 24 off 22 balls in the 9th over. He followed up with scalps of Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer to complete his five-fer. He finished his spell with 4-0-24-5.
Varun Chakaravarthy creates history
Varun Chakaravarthy created history and became the quickest Indian bowler to take two-fivers in T20I cricket. He has achieved the milestone in his 16th T20I. Kuldeep Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are other Indian bowlers to scalp 2 five-fers in T20Is.
Varun has 29 wickets in 16 T20Is he has played so far. The 33-year-old had a forgettable stint with Team India in 2021. He was dropped after the 2021 T20 World Cup.
Courtesy of his success in IPL 2024, Varun made his return to Team India and he has performed exceptionally well. He took his maiden five-fer on the South Africa tour. Kuldeep has 69 wickets in 40 T20Is while Bhuvneshwar has scalped 90 wickets in 87 T20Is.
England score 171
Courtesy of Liam Livingstone's 43 off 24 balls, England managed to breach the 150-run mark and they put on a total of 171. Duckett also played his part in the total and hit 51 off 28 balls. Buttler couldn't capitalise on his good start and departed for 24 off 22 balls.
For India, Hardik dismissed 2 batters while Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel scalped a wicket each. Mohammed Shami couldn't dismiss a batsman in his comeback game. He replaced Arshdeep Singh, who was rested. Shami made his return to Team India for the first time since the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
