India are all set to host England in the 1st T20I at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday, January 22. Following India’s disappointing performance in Australia, head coach Gautam Gambhir will be under severe pressure to deliver in this home series.
Gambhir’s position has been under severe scrutiny and as per several reports, the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy could be an acid test for the former KKR mentor. Ahead of the first game, Gambhir visited the famous Kalighat Temple in Kolkata. He was seen offering his prayers at the temple.
India last were humiliated by New Zealand in a home Test series. The Kiwis inflicted a 3-0 whitewash on Rohit Sharma’s side which took a great toll on their World Test Championship hopes.
The Men In Blue will be involved in a five match T20I series starting from Wednesday followed by a three match ODI series which will serve as preparation for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Indian team will open their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 while the big ticket clash against Pakistan will be held on February 23 in Dubai.
India announced Champions Trophy squad
Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness has remained a concern. The 31 year old reportedly suffered a back spasm during the Sydney Test match and didn’t feature in the second innings. Mohammed Shami returned to the squad after a long hiatus and he will also be taking part in the T20I and ODI series against England. Shami hasn’t played a competitive match for India since the ICC ODI World Cup final in 2023 and he will be eager to prove his worth once again.
Mohammed Siraj didn’t find a place and Arshdeep Singh has been selected as the third pacer. Rohit Sharna will lead the team once again in this marquee event.
